How long have you been driving a taxi and how did you start?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I was anointed at a young age to be my father\u2019s relief driver during our various ramblings around both the US and Canada. \u00a0First in New Mexico, then in Alberta I learned to drive in our cream-colored 1952 Dodge Cornet. \u00a0By the time I was 14 I had a learning permit which allowed me the freedom to co-pilot the Dodge up and down the rural byways. \u00a0Growing up, my father was a taxi driver in between professional jobs, first in Toledo, Ohio and then in Denver, Colorado. \u00a0Based on his stories while on the job, I can assure everyone that the taxi business has certainly remained the same.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I started as a taxi driver in the autumn of 1987 quite accidentally. \u00a0At that point, my life was in upheaval as a pending divorce threatened my sanity. \u00a0I had a good job as a psychiatric case manager so money wasn\u2019t an issue. \u00a0I had just arrived back in Seattle from a short poetry reading tour when I flagged down a taxi. \u00a0We had gone barely five blocks before he asked, \u201cDo you want to drive a taxi?\u201d \u00a0\u201cNo,\u201d I replied, \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d \u00a0Anyway, I took the character\u2019s card and upon reconsideration I started driving on weekends. \u00a0The rest is history, personal taxi history that is!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What is Seattle like to be driving a taxi in? \u00a0What is something you love about your city?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Seattle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1252 alignright\" title=\"Seattle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Seattle-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Seattle-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Seattle-420x300.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Seattle.jpg 518w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/a>Seattle is a gateway city to both the State of Alaska and the Far East thus transforming a medium-sized city into what I term \u201ca real taxi city.\u201d \u00a0You can make big taxi money if you put the hours in. \u00a0However, navigating your cab down the streets here can be painful as Seattle drivers are \u201cout-of-control-in-slow-motion!\u201d \u00a0\u00a0There is a unique driving style here to say the least and it is frustrating, very frustrating.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And one of my favorite aspects of Seattle has to be the parks; the city has beautiful parks!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>It\u2019s great to hear. \u00a0You know Seattle\u2019s calculator is one of our busiest pages. \u00a0So you blog while not on duty. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Was there a specific moment or reason that you decided to share your experiences as a taxi driver?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">My main motivation to begin blogging was to communicate to the world an unblemished description of taxi reality, not as presented in some kind of myth or comic book reality. \u00a0Not \u201cCash Cab\u201d or \u201cTaxi Confessions\u201d or similar silliness. \u00a0My blog reflects the truth behind the taxi industry and not just in Seattle. You could change the name to any other city and the stories would all be similar. \u00a0I present factual taxi: the good, the bad and the insane.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Also, my girlfriend Laura kept bugging me to begin one, so it is all of her fault! \u00a0She knew I held some opinions regarding my experiences on the job.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">You describe countless encounters with passengers in your blog, is there a single experience that always stands out as the most memorable? \u00a0Favorite? \u00a0Worst?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">How to choose&#8230;but long rides is a good place to begin. My first really long ride is nominated as my favorite. \u00a0It was Christmas Eve 1989 and I was sitting on the Greyhound stand. \u00a0A man comes up and wants to go to Vancouver, BC, Canada. \u00a0All flights are grounded and he wants to get home. \u00a0I asked if he would be opposed to picking up my girlfriend and he had no qualms, so I swung by my house to grab Laura. \u00a0From here we headed north to Vancouver, driving through a thick ground-laden fog. \u00a0After dropping the fellow off, Laura and I shared a lovely Christmas Eve dinner in Chinatown in Vancouver. \u00a0It was wonderful!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/seattle_2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1253\" title=\"seattle_2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/seattle_2-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/seattle_2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/seattle_2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/seattle_2-299x300.png 299w, https:\/\/www.taxifarefinder.com\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/seattle_2.png 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a>The worst encounter I have had was with one especially angry woman. \u00a0I picked her up at a hotel and she asked to be brought to a residential area, a huge suburban area southeast of Seattle. \u00a0The weather was terrible, a miserable rainstorm, yet somehow the weather inside of the taxi was much worse. \u00a0The woman questioned my navigational skills and inserted choice commentary for the duration of the ride. \u00a0Finally, through all of the commotion, we arrived at the destination and she sarcastically commented that I should try another occupation. \u00a0I replied by telling her that I had a new book coming out and would be happy to send her a copy. Needless to say, she quickly handed me a twenty and exited the cab.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Taxi drivers are full of great wisdom. \u00a0Can you share with us some? \u00a0What is one lesson you may NOT have learned if you were not a taxi driver?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One piece of wisdom I learned while working as a taxi driver is: 99% of the human population is generous and caring, but watch out for the remaining 1%, they are trouble!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One thing I have learned beyond anything from taxi driving is humility. Driving a taxi is a very humbling experience. The main reasons being: how challenging it is to find the money, avoid the ever present idiots behind the wheel and remain sane and courteous with your passengers. It isn\u2019t easy. \u00a0Quickly your temperature will rise. \u00a0Never again will I think I am \u201cMister-Top-Of-The-Mountain\u201d as at any moment I can be in engulfed in an avalanche. \u00a0Humbling I assure you.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>We couldn\u2019t agree more regarding the 99% comment. \u00a0It\u2019s the 1%. \u00a0\u00a0&#8230; \u00a0You are active and outspoken in the taxi community. \u00a0What do you see as the biggest change that needs to occur in the industry?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The biggest change required is a change in attitude. \u00a0Another problem is the fact that the professional lease-driver is indispensable to the industry. \u00a0And finally, another is that governmental bureaucracy, municipal, county and state must recognize how important and vital the taxi industry is to the overall transportation infrastructure.
